NICE – FRANCE
A GPS app for smartphones will help those who wishes to visit Nice, a French city located at the South of the country, on the south east coast of the Mediterranean Sea, at the “Côte d’Azur”, at the French Riviera, and the capital of the department of “Alpes Maritimes” and that is today a beach vacation resort.
The first notice of human settlements of the area where Nice (Nicaea in the Latin language) settled date back about 400,000 years; the city was founded by the Greek people of Marseille in the 4th century B.C., with the name of Nikaia, based on the name of the Nike the Greek goddess of victory.
Nice became famous in the second half of the 18th century when the English upper classes moved to the city in the winter attracted by the balmy climate of the Mediterranean, being very known the “Promenade des Anglais” (the Walkway of the English), a walkway along the sea where they constructed their houses and that nowadays for the inhabitants of the city is used, mainly on Sundays, to go for a walk or to ride a bicycle.
The main events of the city are the Carnival that take place along the “Promenades des Anglais” and the Nice Jazz Festival that takes place every year since 1948.
Being one the most visited cities of the world there are many interesting places to visit in nice, such as the Museums Marc Chagall, Matisse, where it is possible to see Roman ruins, Beaux-Arts, International d’Art Naïf Anatole Jakovsky, Terra-Amata, Asian Art and of Modern and Contemporary Arts, the Hotel Negresco, on the “Promenade des Anglais”, the Opera Building, several squares (“place”), likethe Place Masséna, the main square of the city, the Place Rossetti, located at the centre of the old town and the Place du Palais, the Castle, the Botanic Garden, the Old City, theFort of Mont Alban, the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, dated from the 17th century, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, the Notre-Dame de Nice and the Sainte Jeanne d’Arc Church. Other interesting places to visit at Nice are the neighborhood of Cimiez and the archeological site of Terra Amata.
At Cimiez is possible to visit the ruins of Cemenelum, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Alpes Maritimae, which was at that time a separate city and a rival of Nice (the Place Masséna is located at Cimiez) and where it is possible to admire the Hotel Régina, where the British Queen Victoria spend her time on the French Riviera, and the Franciscan Church (Church of the Assumption)and Monastery, theMonastery of Our Lady of Cimiez, dated from the 16th century, and the Franciscan Museum, with more than 350 documents and sacred art works.
Terra Amata contains several tools dated approximately from 400,000 B.C., from the lower Paleolithic period, vestiges of the first domination of fire by the Humankind in Europe and traces, on several layers on a fossil beach, of settlement of habitations, the oldest ones dated from 380,000 B.C
